Horse Poopology – The Science and Art of Horse Poop

March 11, 2011 by Stephanie Krahl

Poopology
When you got your first horse did you ever think about how much poop she would produce?  Many times it’s an afterthought.  If you have multiple horses it can add up.

Did you know that a 1,000 lb. horse produces approximately 50 lbs. of manure per day or about 10 tons per year?  That’s a lot of poop!

In a previous article I published on how to manage horse manure naturally I introduced you to some powerful manure management strategies.  However, management is only one element of horse poopology™.

Such Is the Real Nature of Horses: Horse Behavior at a Deeper Level

February 25, 2011 by Stephanie Krahl

Robert Vavra
When the first horse came into your life, did you realize the importance of understanding equine behavior?  I don’t know about you, but it didn’t cross my mind.

I’ve had a special connection with horses since I was just a toddler.  There’s always been this feeling that runs so deep inside of me that I’ve never been able to fully describe.

Throughout my journey with horses, I’ve had the opportunity to learn from some of the best equine behaviorists in the country.  Not only do they understand horse behavior, they also share that same “deep-rooted feeling” for horses.

The more I learn, the more I realize that fully understanding horses always goes back to the fundamentals.  Nowhere else have I seen Mother Nature’s core principles demonstrated as well as in the beautiful, educational documentary by Robert Vavra, Such is the Real Nature of Horses.

Those are also the individuals who will seek out something good in a seemingly bad situation.

Then there are those who make it a habit to complain and to blame anything else instead of redirecting that energy and looking at themselves.

You can create your own luck to some degree. [Read more…]

How to Use Horse Watering Behavior for Powerful Natural Boarding

June 14, 2010 by Stephanie Krahl

FaithStephanie’s Horse Faith at the Water Hole

In a previous article called The Scoop On Horse Poop, I discussed the importance of manure when it comes to relative dominance in a herd and how you can utilize a horse’s natural behaviors to your advantage for managing manure.  This article continues to provide information on bridging that gap between the world of the wild horse and the domestic horse.

Closely mimicking a more natural environment for our horses, by default, can result in a healthy equine partner that will live a long quality life.  As an added bonus we may even see a decrease in our veterinarian bills.  🙂 [Read more…]

How to Manage Horse Manure Naturally

June 3, 2010 by Stephanie Krahl

Horse Manure Management
Many years ago Sharon and I decided to drive to Glen Rose, TX to visit the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center.   As it states on their website, The Fossil Rim Wildlife Center exists to aid in the conservation of animal species under the threat of extinction in the wild.  The experience was fascinating and if you’re ever in Texas it’s a great place to visit.  It’s also a place you can put on your list for donations each year.
